Squillace
the village of
Ceramics

Squillace is one of the main tourist destinations on the Ionian coast of Calabria, overlooking the gulf of the same name: a pearl of southern Italy, rich in history and culture, it is immersed in the landscape of the Costa degli Aranci.

This village, which retains a beautiful historical centre and centuries-old traditions, also offers a variety of unique food and wine experiences, thanks to its privileged location between the sea and the mountains.

The Gulf of Squillace boasts enchanting beaches and breathtaking views. The Ionian waters with their typical blue-green colour make this place a perfect destination for sea lovers.

In Greek times, the locality was a flourishing centre of Magna Graecia with the name Skylletion, later to become Scolacium, an important Roman centre with a theatre, amphitheatres, administrative and religious buildings. Historical Squillace (also called Squillace Superiore or Squillace Antica) stands on three hills enclosed by two streams, the Alessi and the Ghetterello.

Historical Centre

One of the main points of interest in the historical centre is the Norman Castle, an imposing structure that dominates the surrounding landscape. This castle, with its well-preserved towers and walls, is a perfect example of medieval architecture.

Of great historical and architectural interest is the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a Norman structure consecrated in the 12th century and rebuilt several times over the centuries.

Amidst the alleys and marvellous artistic portals made of dressed stone, not to be missed is the small Gothic church of Santa Maria della Pietà, now deconsecrated, built entirely of square, dressed stone, with arches and ogival portals. Its vaulted interior is spectacular, rich in symbols belonging to the Templar tradition.

The tradition Of Ceramics

One of the wonders that makes Squillace famous is its ancient and fascinating art of ceramics. The craft workshops scattered around the historic centre are the beating heart of this ancient art. Here, you can admire the craftsmen at work, modelling clay with skill and passion, creating unique works. Each piece is a true masterpiece, the result of a skilful balance between technique and creativity.

The technique used, which distinguishes Squillace artefacts from more common ones, is engobing, i.e. coating the product with white clay, which is then decorated in turn. The result is a typical alternation of colour between orange and white.

The Scolacium Museum And Archaeological Park

Immersed in a monumental expanse of olive trees, a centuries-old olive grove that extends over 35 hectares, the Scolacium Museum and Archaeological Park preserves evidence of the Roman presence, while the Greek presence was almost wiped out by later Roman rule. Of great interest and undisputed charm are the remains of the Roman Forum, a large rectangular area paved with square bricks and surrounded by porticoes (Caesareum, Curia and Baths). Inside are the remains of a small temple, a monumental fountain and a tribunal. From this area come most of the statues and portraits dated between the 1st and 3rd century AD that can be admired in The Scolacium Museum.

On the hill is The Theatre (1st-2nd century A.D.), with a capacity of 3,500 spectators, and the recently discovered panoramic Amphitheatre from the 2nd century A.D., three thermal baths, a necropolis and the aqueduct.

The Scolacium Museum completes the visit to the Scolacium Archaeological Park. Its rooms are the place where the main archaeological finds from the excavations and the gigantic statues are exhibited.
