Corigliano
The Austere

Corigliano Calabro has a very special historical centre, on top of the Colle Serratore, a place from which the entire Sibaritide valley is dominated.

A collection of narrow streets and alleyways that conceal real treasures, evidence of a great history that has solid and deep roots in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Among the most beautiful castles in Calabria, the Ducal Castle of Corigliano was built in 1073 at the behest of Robert Guiscard. The fortress consists of four high walls on two floors surrounded by four round bastions. What is surprising, however, are the interiors so rich that they look like those of a private collection. Of the original core, now extensively remodelled and restored, are the Church of St. Peter and the towers, i.e. the circular donjon and the octagonal turret serving as a belvedere. The latter is accessed via an impressive spiral staircase surrounded by frescoes, which has become the most representative element of the building. Statues and frescoes, refined stained-glass windows that create very special plays of light can be admired around the ducal castle.

A walk through the historic centre reveals other beauties, such as the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Maggiore, also rich in works of art, the Collegiata di San Pietro, the Convento di San Francesco di Paola, a pilgrimage destination and stop on the Franciscan Way in Calabria, and the Pinacoteca Civica.

The Church of St Anthony is the jewel in the crown of Corigliano. It was built in 1400 next to a Franciscan convent. The main element is a dome covered in yellow and blue majolica. The Church, which was designed with a Latin cross plan, has several valuable paintings inside.

Another very interesting church is that of San Francesco da Paola. The building dates back to the 1500s, with a single nave in Romanesque style. Among the treasures kept there are a painting by Felice da Maratea and a painting depicting the Holy Trinity by Pietro Negroni.

Not to be missed is the walk to the Canal Bridge. Erected in 1480 as a city aqueduct, with an arcade system on three levels, one of which is underground, the upper part is used as a passageway.
